Why another index?
Most podcast directories quietly collapse into the same thing: an English-language top-list where a handful of US networks own every slot. If you publish in Slovene, Catalan, Lithuanian or Maltese you can be brilliant and still be invisible.
podcasts.eu.org flips that. Every European language gets its own daily chart, computed on equal terms. Welsh and Ukrainian rank next to German and French. English-language shows are deliberately out of scope — there are already ten directories for those.
How the charts work
- Once a day we pull the trending feeds from the open Podcast Index, filtered to each of our 35 supported language codes (including regional variants like de-AT and pt-PT).
- The Top 50 per language is snapshotted into our local SQLite database — this site reads only local data, so pages are fast and the API stays healthy.
- An hourly “Fresh from Europe” radar records newly discovered feeds in European languages.
- Chart movement arrows (▲▼) compare against the previous daily snapshot.
What “European” means here
Languages, not geopolitics. Our charts cover the EU-27 plus Norway, Iceland, Ukraine, Serbia, Albania, North Macedonia and the stateless languages — Catalan, Basque, Galician, Welsh, Scottish Gaelic and Breton. Portugal’s chart filters out Brazilian variants so Lisbon isn’t drowned by São Paulo.
Principles
- Open data only — everything comes from the Podcast Index, whose core index is free forever. No scraping, no lock-in.
- No tracking — no cookies, no analytics, no ads. The player streams straight from the publisher.
- Independent first — we exist to make small-language independent shows discoverable, not to resell reach.

PHP 8 + SQLite on nginx. Charts refresh nightly via cron; search proxies live results with a one-hour cache. Run by one person who wanted a better answer to “what should I listen to in my language?”.
